\n09:30 – 10:30:<\/strong><\/em> presentation of Guido Vollbeding<\/strong>\u00a0 and discussion: Digital Image Representation<\/em><\/p>\nAbstract: The four fundamental properties of image representation by usage of the DCT (Discrete Cosine Transform) are introduced. These properties are essential for understanding the success of this approach and the flop of other attempts which do not align to them. The JPEG process realizes these properties and thus ideally satisfies the basic requirements of an image coding standard. The basic structure of the JPEG process is shown and the individual processing steps are described. Advanced JPEG functions, which gradually find use in applications, are communicated, especially arithmetic coding, lossless compression, SmartScale and extended color representation. Prospects for future developments are given.<\/p>\n

\n10:45 – 12:00:<\/strong><\/em> presentation of Istv\u00e1n Sebesty\u00e9n<\/strong> and discussion: History of JPEG Standardization<\/em><\/p>\nAbstract: The presentation is one in the series of \u201cmemorial\u201d presentations about JPEG still image compression standardization. It highlights the right timing of JPEG and lists some reasons for its great success. Because of the 25 years jubilee of the IJG open source code release it concentrates on the early relation between the JPEG Standard and the IJG Open Source implementation, and reviews the impact of patents and SDO patent policies on the early JPEG standardization.<\/p>\n

Dr. Istv\u00e1n Sebesty\u00e9n<\/strong> has been Secretary General of Ecma International in Geneva since 2007. Before joining Ecma he has been Director of Standards in Siemens, Munich for 21 years, mostly in the areas of telecommunication terminals and protocols, multimedia and enterprise networks. He has been doing standardization for more than 30 years in various SDO and Fora, like ITU, ISO, ETSI, DIN, IMTC, where he has hold several leading positions. He was one of the founding members of JPEG in 1986. He was – between 1987 and 2000 – on the CCITT (later ITU-T side) the Special Rapporteur responsible for the JPEG standardization. For over 20 years he has been also lecturing at the University of Klagenfurt in Austria and the Technical University of Graz. \u00a0Before that between 1978-1984 he has been Research Scholar at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis in Laxenburg, Austria and was involved in early international computer networking projects and many interdisciplinary ICT technology related studies.<\/p>\n12:00 – 13:00:<\/strong><\/em> Lunch Break<\/p>\n13:00 – 14:30:<\/strong><\/em> Workshop: Future of the JPEG standard and the Independent JPEG Group<\/em>. \n15:00 – 16:00: <\/strong><\/em>presentation of Michael Stepping <\/strong>and discusssion: Use of the JPEG format at the Mobile Video Platform<\/em> (Einsatz des JPEG Formates bei der Mobile Video Plattform)<\/p>\nGerman abstract<\/em>: Die Mobile Video Plattform \u00fcbertragt Live-Video-Streams in den Formaten H.264\/AVC, H.265\/HEVC, MP4 von \u00fcberall auf das Handy und umgekehrt. Welche Rolle spielt dabei das JPEG, ein Stillbildformat? Das JPEG \u00fcbernimmt die Rolle des formatunabh\u00e4ngigen und zeitunabh\u00e4ngigen Transfers von Bildern aus verschiedensten Quellen in sehr guter Qualit\u00e4t. Dies ist aber auch verbunden mit hohen Bitraten bei der \u00dcbertragung von vielen Einzelbildern in schneller Folge.<\/p>\nSowohl IP-\u00dcberwachungskameras als auch Customer Plattformen liefern JPEGs, die sich in schneller Reihenfolge geliefert, dann in Videostreams gem\u00e4\u00df dem aktuellen Stand der Technik \u00fcberf\u00fchren lassen. Damit k\u00f6nnen auch alte, installierte Kameras die neuen, aktuellen Videocodiertechniken beliefern, ohne dass Umr\u00fcstungen der Hardware notwendig werden.<\/p>\n

Michael Stepping<\/strong> is Professor for Mobile Software Development at the University of Applied Sciences Hof<\/em> and CEO of avinotec GmbH<\/em> (www.avinotec.de<\/a>).<\/p>\nGerman bio<\/em>: Nach Studium der Elektrotechnik an der Universit\u00e4t Siegen arbeitete Michael Stepping im Bereich der Software-Entwicklung f\u00fcr die Automatisierungsindustrie und Telefonanlagen. 1997 wechselte Herr Stepping an die FernUniversit\u00e4t Hagen um dort bei der Arbeitsgruppe MPEG im Bereich Streaming und Videoverarbeitung mitzuarbeiten.
\n2004 wurde er mit dem Thema “Ein Beitrag zu MPEG-4 Broadcast” promoviert und gr\u00fcndete 2005 die avinotec GmbH, die sich mit Live-Video-Streaming von und zu mobilen Endger\u00e4ten befasst.
