The first version was released on October 7<sup>th<\/sup> 1991. The\u00a0reference software from the\u00a0Independent JPEG Group was\u00a0a\u00a0key to\u00a0the success of\u00a0the original JPEG standard and\u00a0has found widespread adoption in\u00a0applications of\u00a0image coding. The Independent JPEG Group (IJG) is located at and supported by the Institute for Applied Informatics (InfAI) of the University Leipzig.<\/p>\n<p>The Independent JPEG group believes that the original JPEG standard provides the best potential for the future image coding technology.
