{"id":680,"date":"2025-12-17T03:01:11","date_gmt":"2025-12-17T02:01:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jpegclub.org\/reference\/?p=680"},"modified":"2025-12-17T08:26:17","modified_gmt":"2025-12-17T07:26:17","slug":"jpeg-progress-in-windows-and-the-rise-of-the-arm-platform","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jpegclub.org\/reference\/jpeg-progress-in-windows-and-the-rise-of-the-arm-platform\/","title":{"rendered":"JPEG Progress in Windows and the Rise of the ARM platform"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Leipzig, December 17<sup>th<\/sup> 2025 \u2013<\/strong> In the last year, 2024, we reported that the Apple Mac platform currently has the most advanced JPEG support integrated in the operating system.<br \/>\nIn October 2024 Microsoft released a new platform version of their current operating system, the Windows 11 2024 Update, also called the <em>Germanium<\/em> or <em>Hudson Valley<\/em> platform.<br \/>\nThis system has now finally support for advanced JPEG with arithmetic coding (JPEG 7) in the basic system components: File Explorer, Windows Photo Viewer, and Graphics Device Interface (GDI).<br \/>\nWe are glad to see that there is finally some JPEG progress in Windows.<\/p>\n<p>Independent JPEG Group is currently busy completing the new JPEG 10 version as announced for upcoming release, which will further drive the advance in image communication.<\/p>\n<p>Another remarkable feature is the fact that Windows 11 2024 Update is the first release of Windows in history with a publicly available version for another processor architecture beside the common x86\/x64 Intel\/AMD processor architecture. The first version of this library was released on 7-Oct-1991. After this, many versions of libjpeg were created to make the standard sustainable for future applications. The IJG was headed originally by Thomas Lane and since 2005 by Guido Vollbeding. From 2008 the IJG is part of the Institute for Applied Informatics (InfAI) in Leipzig, where the format is developed further. The\u00a0reference software of the\u00a0Independent JPEG Group was\u00a0a\u00a0key to\u00a0the success of\u00a0the original JPEG standard and\u00a0has found widespread adoption in\u00a0applications of\u00a0image coding.
