The Independent JPEG Group ist the developer of the software library libjpeg. This library is the technical basis of the most widespread media format of all times. The IJG sees its duty to develop libjpeg so that it will be fit for all future applications.

It is our conviction: A long living and widespread standard as JPEG can only live on if it is developed further.

The IJG does its best to ensure this innovation. In 2021 the group celebrates the 30th anniversary of JPEG. During its history the viability of the standard of JPEG was often doubted. But in practice it went from success to success. At present billions of JPEG files are produced every day.
