Leipzig, December 20th 2024 – This year, in January 2024, the Independent JPEG Group (IJG) released a new version 9f (9.6) of the JPEG reference software. This release proved to be quite stable so far, and it will be the last version of the 9 series. JPEG 10 is now in preparation and will be the next version, with a preview version scheduled for publication in the next year 2025 and release on the usual cycle in January 2026.
The current version of the JPEG reference software added support for the Apple Mac platform with its Xcode IDE (Integrated Development Environment). We are glad to welcome another reference application on macOS with full JPEG 9 support: GraphicConverter. GraphicConverter is one of the most used photo editing applications on the Mac with millions of users. The Mac Operating System, macOS, has built-in partial JPEG 8 support in the system and system apps and is thus more advanced than other operating systems regarding the level of JPEG support.
The upcoming JPEG 10 version will be a groundbreaking new release which clarifies the bit depth issue in JPEG, enabling higher bit depth support with backward compatibility and preparing the next standard for file interchange. About Independent JPEG Group (IJG)
IJG is an informal group that writes and distributes a widely used free library for JPEG image compression on a non-profit basis. The first version of this library was released on 7-Oct-1991. After this, many versions of libjpeg were created to make the standard sustainable for future applications. The IJG was headed originally by Thomas Lane and since 2005 by Guido Vollbeding. From 2008 the IJG is part of the Institute for Applied Informatics (InfAI) in Leipzig, where the format is developed further. The reference software of the Independent JPEG Group was a key to the success of the original JPEG standard and has found widespread adoption in applications of image coding.
