Press Release

Leipzig, October 14th 2022 – One year ago, in October 2021, the Independent JPEG Group celebrated the 30th anniversary of the most successful electronic image format JPEG.
Now we are preparing for the 30th anniversary of the most common Integrated Development Environments (IDE) for Graphical User Interface (GUI) Application Software: Microsoft Visual Studio/Microsoft Visual C++ (MSVC) and Embarcadero RAD Studio (Rapid Application Development)/C++Builder/Delphi. Both were first released in 1997 and will celebrate their 30th anniversary in 2027 (Delphi is actually two years earlier – first released in 1995 and 30th anniversary in 2025).

In January 2022 the Independent JPEG Group released a new version 9e of libjpeg. This version adds ARM and ARM64 platform support in the Visual Studio build and contains numerous other improvements in security, performance and stability. Reference applications like cPicture, PhotoLine, Directory Opus and StudioLine Photo have already been updated with the current version.

A new preview version of libjpeg 9f is now provided which is scheduled for release in 2024. The Visual Studio setup is now portable across multiple Visual Studio versions, and it supports the new ARM64EC (Emulation Compatible) platform setting. An entirely new build system is added for Embarcadero C++Builder/RAD Studio supporting Win32 and Win64 platforms. The Delphi integration is also supported with special configuration options.

With these features the Independent JPEG Group ensures that the JPEG image format can be properly supported by application software developed with the major Integrated Development Environments.
